More often than not, pregnancy comes with a host of new aches and pains as the body undergoes a variety of physical and hormonal changes.
While adjusting to this new normal, many of our clients wonder if a chiropractic adjustment is right for them.
Today, we answer your most pressing questions about chiropractic care during pregnancy with the help of Dr. Aubrey Blevins from Mitchell Chiropractic Life Center.
Let’s dive in!
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE, ANYWAYS? HOW DOES IT WORK?
Dr. Blevins: “The purpose of chiropractic care is to restore proper communication between the brain and the body. Chiropractic is based on two basic premises. First, the body is a self-healing organism; your body was designed to heal itself.
Second, the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and nerves) controls all other systems of the body. The spine surrounds the spinal cord and nerves exit the spinal cord between each vertebrae in the spine. The bones of the spine can misalign. When they do, it can cause nerve interference. Nerve interference causes pain and dysfunction.
This is called a vertebral subluxation. Chiropractors detect and correct vertebral subluxations. A chiropractic adjustment realigns subluxated vertebrae and allows the body to heal itself the way God intended it to.”
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE DURING PREGNANCY? ARE THERE SPECIFIC AILMENTS, DISCOMFORTS, OR CONDITIONS CHIROPRACTIC CARE MAY BE USEFUL IN TREATING DURING THIS TIME?
Dr. Blevins: “During pregnancy, it is so important for mom’s nervous system to function proper because your little baby is forming inside your body. The healthier mom is, the healthier baby can be! As the baby grows inside you, your body changes and adapts to accommodate for the life growing inside of you. This can cause mom’s spine to misalign, resulting in low back pain, arm pain, numbness in hands, headaches, sciatica, and many other issues. Chiropractic care can help with these issues.”
WHAT IS A PRENATAL ADJUSTMENT LIKE? IS IT SAFE?
Dr. Blevins: “Prenatal chiropractic care is safe and effective. I use a technique called Thompson Technique which utilizes a drop table. The drops in the table allow for specific adjusting without using much force. My table can be adjusted to accommodate an expectant mom throughout her entire pregnancy.”
WHEN SHOULD A PREGNANT PERSON BE ADJUSTED DURING PREGNANCY? AT WHAT POINTS, AND HOW OFTEN?
Dr. Blevins: “Chiropractic care is beneficial throughout pregnancy. I would recommend getting adjusted once a month, for the majority of the pregnancy. During the last month or so, expectant moms may need to be adjusted more frequently as her body prepares for the birth of her baby. Pelvic alignment affects the birth canal, so it is extremely important to have the pelvis checked toward the end of pregnancy.”
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK FOR WHEN SEARCHING FOR A CHIROPRACTOR FOR PRENATAL ADJUSTMENTS?
Dr. Blevins: “All chiropractors receive training in prenatal and pediatric care. I would recommend looking for a chiropractor that you feel comfortable with, one who has experience with prenatal chiropractic care, and one who has tables or pregnancy pads to accommodate expectant moms.”
